WHY
WASTE GASIFICATION?
- Waste gasification is a gasification-based chemical recycling process.
- It enables the recirculation of mixed, unsorted & challenging carbon-containing waste streams (e.g., MSW, mixed plastics & composites, sewage sludge, farm waste, agricultural residues, green cuts, …) as alternative carbon raw materials for the production of value chemical products (e.g., carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, SAF, …)
MOTIVATION
FOR WASTE GASIFICATION?
- Increasing waste generation – especially in megacities – demands innovative solutions to achieve multiple goals ranging from resource efficiency, circularity to decarbonization.
- Chemical industry seeks innovations to substitute (imported) fossil raw materials with (domestic) waste materials for production to support the transformation towards sustainable and resilient chemistry.
- Coupling of waste with chemical sectors via waste gasification supports the decarbonization and sustainability transformation of these two carbon intensive
industries.
CHALLENGES
FOR WASTE GASIFICATION?
- Emerging technology whose Technology Readiness Level (TRL) remains to be increased.
- Economic feasibility and ecological benefits compared to conventional waste management (i.e., Waste-to-Energy) & petrochemistry as well as alternative decarbonization routes (e.g., electrification, CCUS) remain to be determined.
- Societal, market and political acceptance to increase Market Readiness Level (MRL) required.
OBJECTIVES
OF CR-Waste2Products?
- Identify state-of-the-art pressurized gasification technologies & required developments/adaptations for waste gasification.
- Develop “feedstock menus” and identify required pre-treatment processes for waste gasification.
- Evaluate economic feasibility (TEA) and environmental impacts (LCA) of waste gasification compared to direct incineration of unsorted & challenging waste streams and alternative decarbonization pathways.
- Identify and bring together key stake-holders from science, industry & politics in Singapore/Asia and build a bridge for dialogues/ cooperation with the global community for circular carbon technologies.
